Key background

Portland’s streets have heaved with protests following the dying of unarmed Black man George Floyd in police custody in May. The “Wall of Moms” demonstration, which has been duplicated throughout different main U.S. cities, began after federal brokers deployed by President Trump started detaining anti-racism demonstrators in unmarked vehicles earlier this month. Local officers, together with Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, have blasted Trump’s use of federal brokers, who’ve clashed with protesters, as “abhorrent.” But on Wednesday, Trump moved to broaden the measure to cities together with Chicago and Albuquerque as a part of “Operation Legend” to crack down on what he says is violent crime, and assaults on monuments. The measure is seen by critics as a manner for Trump to say his robust on crime stance forward of the November election.
